Here's a sneak peak:
Miami, Fl.
“We have too much history Ahmean. I’m supposed to just believe that you found something just as significant with China doll over here?” Denton was referring to the bone skinny, man stealing hoochie all loved up on her man. That’s right, Ahmean was her man, and she had flown to Miami, for the second time in two weeks, to prove to him just that. The chick better be grateful that there was a coffee table between them, because Denton wanted nothing more than to lunge over and choke the life out of her. “What the bitch got on you? She need a green card or something, cause I’m not fin to sit here and believe that what ya’ll have is real.”
“Oh, so sad. Don’t stop though, I’m going to want to tell my girlfriends all about how you went all ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’ up in here. Keep your dignity sista, and just go. We’re happy, and you can believe it.” Quail Ling said. In actuality she was just Ahmean’s manager, newly hired, but had agreed to play the role of his new fiancé tonight to help him out. It wasn’t the craziest thing she’d ever done for a client in this business, and she was actually enjoying this.
“Bitch you are brand new, okay! This don’t even involve you, I’m talking to my man right now. You don’t want to fuck with me, you are seriously overmatched.” Denton eyed Quail Ling from head to toe, tipping her head to the side for emphasis. “In every way.”
“Listen, we need to be adults about this. Baby, would you excuse us for a moment.” Ahmean took Quail Ling’s hand affectionately and led her towards the bedroom, kissing her on the forehead before letting her leave. He was trying to push Denton away, and he felt like this was the only way to do it. She had flown back down here, even after he told her that he wasn’t going back to Jersey. She had told him she couldn’t stay there without him, and now here she was. Denton never looked further than what she wanted to do in that moment. When she called him from the airport, he had quickly devised a plan to end this charade. He loved her, but after what she’d done to him, he knew in his heart that he could no longer be with her.
The silence that fell over the room was overwhelming. Denton was trying to digest what Ahmean was trying to say to her, but it wasn’t processing. She was 22 years old, and had been with this man for most of her life. How serious was Ahmean’s love for her if he could go overboard like this after she’d made one little mistake? “Did I fuck it up that bad baby? Really, you doing it like this? You can’t possibly love that chick enough to just pick up your whole life and stay here with her. After 10 years, you know this ain’t right.”
“When I think about that nigga’s fingers in between your thighs, and you absolutely loving it, I’m even more convinced that this is the right thing to do! You think you can do what you want to whoever you want Denton, like it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission. I’m over that shit. It’s just so much one person can take!”
Okay, maybe the mistake wasn’t that little. She would forever regret that night at the 40/40 club, the events that had set this nightmare into motion. She had subjected Ahmean to watching her get her rocks off with her side piece, Clyde. It wasn’t intentional, he just happened to be in the same place as they were when they were saying “good-bye“, she was ending it with Clyde for good that night. Ahmean hadn’t confronted them then. Instead he’d followed them to an after party where it was going a little further than a little finger fucking in a dark corner of a club. Things hadn’t been the same since, but she was determined to make things right. She knew they had an unbreakable bond, and once they got through this, well they would be able to get through anything.
But Ahmean had surprised her with this Asian hoe, acting like she was the second coming. “So I’m just supposed to take this? Just accept that it’s over between us? We family Ahmean, we were always more than lovers. Tell me it wasn’t more than love between us?”
Ahmean turned his back to her, not wanting to answer the question. Their breaking up was as much for her benefit as it was for his. He believed that their lives were going in different directions. He’d just won first place at the Hip Hop Olympics a few weeks back and it was almost as if his career had taken off over night. It was everything he’d wanted, all he’d ever dreamed about. Denton was a handful on her best day, he didn’t have time to be a good man to her now, especially when she wasn’t trying to be a good woman to him. He had his career to think about.
“TELL ME!” Denton shouted, catching him off guard. “This ain’t about that night anymore Ahmean. You know damn well I love you, and I know you know I will never see him again. Remember the life we talked about? Baby it‘s here, and it‘s real. And I‘m here too. I know what I did, Ahmean believe me when I say I‘m owning that shit. Don‘t let this prevent us from having a future.” She walked over to where he was by the patio door. He’d been staying in a suite since his win and Denton had to admit, it was plush. Everything about the life that he’d stepped into appealed to Denton and everything she was about, but all of that was secondary to her right now.
She had been through a lot these last few weeks, one of her closest friends, Georgina, had been admitted to a psych ward. All behind an ego tripping skank who didn’t know how to let things go. Georgina was more like a sister to Denton, and to have her taken away hurt Denton more than she could say. It reminded her of how they had taken her little sister Junie away to a foster home four years ago, when her parents had been murdered. She hadn’t seen her since. If she thought about it, she had more memories of losing folks than anyone sticking around.
She was determined to break that pattern. There was no way that she was going to lose Ahmean too. He was her first love, her only love. She’d only ever been with one other man besides him, prided herself on it. But to Ahmean, it was one more too many.
“Look at me baby,” she ran her hand up his arm and he jumped away, as if in pain. That hurt her. “I don’t know how to be without you. Can’t we just try again? Please?”
“This can’t be fixed Denton.”
“That’s because you not giving me a chance to fix it. Yes, I fucked up. I can admit that. The fact that I can admit to making a mistake at all is a huge indicator that I’ve matured. That’s because of you. I need you to see that. I’m not that same selfish person I was before. I’ve changed for you.”
He was aware of the changes, he’d been keeping track of Denton since their break up. He’d called her best friend Philly every other day while they were apart, and he knew that she’d been suffering without him. He’d done that more for his own peace of mind, because even after all she’d done, he couldn’t turn off his feelings like a switch. “I’m just supposed to believe you changed because you say you did? I got a lot going on right now and I don’t have time to be wondering if you sliding off with the next nigga.” He turned around and looked her straight in the eye. “Not many people get the opportunity that I have right now. Being with you is not the right look for what I’m trying to do.”
“Excuse me?” Denton’s voice took on a high pitched tone. “I know you ain’t fixing your mouth to say that is the right look for you.” She had her finger cocked in the direction of where Quail Ling was in the bedroom.
“See, it ain’t even about her.”
“Is the bitch pregnant?” Denton said, crossing her arms, tipping her head to the side. “I mean, I don’t get it. I can understand you wanting to pursue your career and what not, but to latch on to the first chick you see? That ain’t you. If you trying to hurt me Ahmean it’s working, alright? So can we just stop this game, you going overboard with this shit. You don‘t want that, you want me. Come on, baby. Let‘s at least try to work on this.”
“I do want to be with her. She doesn’t have to be pregnant. She’s not you, and pretty much that was the only requirement I had.”
He might as well had slapped her across the face, it stung that much. He knew it, knew that it was a low blow, but she was beginning to wear him down. It was her eyes, he could always see forever in them, and they were so sad and pleading with him to make this situation better. Her face was conveying the message that she was in pain, and for as long as he could remember, he was always the one to take her pain away. He was her protector, had loved her since he knew what love was, and then taught it to her. But she was no good for him right now, she’d shown her true colors. That was the problem with niggas nowadays, the truth could be right in their faces, and instead of acknowledging it, they choose to look the other way. He was leaning towards being one of those niggas right now, so he had to wrap this up.
Denton was still thrown from what he’d said. A part of her took satisfaction in knowing that when choosing someone whose only pre-requisite was to not be her, he had found the best candidate. Denton was half black, half Puerto Rican with long, dark hair down her back. Quail Ling had lightened her hair, so they didn’t even have that in common. And she was tall for an Asian chick, Denton absently thought. But that’s who he’s choosing over me.
Then Ahmean completely broke her heart. He reached into his pocket and peeled off several bills. “This is enough to get your high class ass back to the hood where you belong. You gon’ realize one day that no matter how much you try to cover it up with all that name brand shit you be wearing, you’re as fake as everybody else.” He grabbed her hand and slapped the money into it. “I did.”
Denton’s lip began to tremble, her eyes locked with his, a tear threatening to leave hers. There was no comfort left to be found there, and all at once she felt exposed and very much alone. It was over, she wasn’t going to win this. She’d lost him.
Denton dropped her head in defeat, breaking the connection. Her heart was aching, her pride stomped on, but she loved this man still, and didn’t care whether or not he saw her beaten. After what she’d done, she deserved it.
She grabbed her purse and headed for the door. Once it shut behind her, she gave up fighting back her tears.
